On Tuesday, 12 January 2010, an earthquake struck Haiti killing many thousands. In response, Pope Benedict XVI called on "the generosity of all people" to support those worst affected. He added that "the Catholic Church will not fail to move immediately, through her charitable institutions, to meet the most immediate needs of the population".
